Reels and short video editing
I edit Reels and vertical video around what the viewer feels in each stretch, and I make the sound work on a phone speaker.
How I edit
Before cutting, I write down what the viewer should feel in each stretch. Then I pick images the audience recognizes at once, instead of captioning the speech with cards. I edit in FilmCraft, an open source editor I contribute to, and use a script that measures the video and shows where the stimulus drops.
The sound
Music over everything makes a video feel empty. I build the sound in layers: ambience, weight and detail. An effect only goes in where something happens on screen. I balance music and voice for a phone speaker and check the volume before exporting.
My work
Between Oct 7 and Nov 7 I published 28 Reels. The median was 33.6K views, the most watched reached 1.2M views and 7 did not pass 10K. I write about what I took from those numbers on the blog. If you would rather edit your own Reels with AI, my method is in the Claude skills.
